Rioja – one of the most famous wine-growing regions in Spain, a destination along the Way of St. James and home to the Viura grape, Spain’s most widely cultivated white grape variety. The high-yield vine produces wines with a character that is as unique as the hotel that shares its name, Hotel Viura. The boutique hotel is situated next to the ancient church in Villabuena de Alva, a small, medieval, wine-growing town. The owners of the hotel, Spanish architects Designhouses, created the four-star hotel with a somewhat unusual note, full-bodied architecture and a unique finish.
Outside, the extraordinary dominates: clearly defined cubes, claret-coloured or white, are seemingly stacked one on top of the other and, together, make up the hotel. Inside, calm prevails. All 29 rooms and the four suites are spacious and, thanks to windows extending from floor to ceiling, offer an unobstructed view of the fascinating landscape of the Sierra de Cantabrias. The furnishings are complemented by natural materials, earth tones and plants. The open and light design also extends to the bathrooms, which are separated from the sleeping area by simple curtains. Duravit ceramics from the Santosa range blend harmoniously into the open bathroom area.
Hotel Viura is regarded as a pioneer in environmental protection and sustainability. For example, the heating is generated by a biomass boiler fuelled by olive stones. The famous Rioja wine is stored in a natural wine cellar with no need for refrigeration units. The hotel’s commitment has been recognised with the “Energy Performance Certificate”, Grade A.
