At first glance, the building on New York’s Lower East Side looks fairly inconspicuous. It blends in perfectly with the architecture of the district and is a pleasant addition to the street. On a closer look, however, it becomes clear that this ten-story building is in fact an architectural jewel.
The renowned New York architects’ firm Grzywinski + Pons were not only responsible for the building’s exterior, but also had a significant hand in its interior design. The colors, proportions, and textures are perfectly harmonized both outside and in. While the brick facade exudes a certain rustic flavor, the attentive observer will notice some clever details on closer inspection. Different-colored bricks form a subtle progression, causing the color of the facade to change – almost imperceptibly – from bottom to top.
The slim building houses sixteen furnished studios and four furnished apartments. The ground floor features a workspace suitable for commercial use. Inside, the building’s industrial aesthetic with the original pillars, bolts, and girders is offset by the use of soft, warm textures. The architects have used luxurious surfaces and materials to lend the building’s interior a subtle yet stylish charm.
For Grzywinski + Pons it was important for the interior furnishing and fit-out of the building to give the visitor an immediate sense of where they are: on the Lower East Side.
The interior design fixtures are also consistent with this unique architectural style. The bathrooms feature Scola washbasins by Duravit. The striking geometry of the rectangular washbasin with its cylindrical inner basin could have been custom made for this unique building.
